How to change PERNR / user ID assignment

This old thread was unanswered how to change the portal user id 's assigned employee in ESS configuration, so I thought I would post my findings on its solution.

Occasionally it is necessary to change HR personnel numbers, e.g. in the case of cross-country transfer. In this case, there is no need to create a new SAP user ID. To change the user ID assignment in the HR master record, you must do the following:

1. Using PA30, enter the "old" personnel number, and infotype 105, subtype 0001. Click the pencil to change.
2. "Delimit" that record by entering the appropriate End Date. Save.
3. Now go to PA30 and enter the "new" personnel number, infotype 105, subtype 0001. Click the sheet of paper to create.
4. Enter a new record with an appropriate Start Date (after the end date in step 2), End Date of 12/31/9999 and enter the user ID. No error results if these records do not overlap time-wise. Save the record.

Note that my attempt to re-assign using the HRUSER transaction was unsuccessful. The help on the error message indicated to make the change manually. If anyone else has a different experience with HRUSER, I'd be interested in learning the fix.
